What’s the East Coast Lighthouse? – The Number One Must-Do When Visiting Gisborne

The East Cape Lighthouse boasts as the best view for seeing the very first sunrise on the planet each day (see: Home of the First Sunrise). The lighthouse was built in 1900, stationed on a nearby island. It was later moved to its current location on the coast. The lighthouse was built large enough to house three lighthouse keepers, but it is currently controlled remotely off-site in Wellington.

When you visit the East Cape Lighthouse, wear comfortable shoes and leave yourself plenty of time to reach the top, possibly up to an hour depending on your fitness level (some may only take 15 minutes). There’s about 700 steps from the parking area to get to the lighthouse.
