The REAF Organization’s Observing Nature Guided Tour at Opotiki Wharf
If you’re one of those who people loves the ocean, learning about marine life, or enjoys a trip to the aquarium, look no further than a visit to the Opotiki Wharf for a unique interactive hands-on tour you can’t get anywhere else. Opotiki is just over 90 minutes of driving along the beautiful coastline from the Hicks Bay Motel. The Observing Nature guided tour is hosted by REAF (Recreating Enhanced Areas for Fish); an organization dedicated to preserving marine life populations by partnering with nature and educating the community about sustainable fishing practices.
The Observing Nature guided tour and workshop cost is $20 per person and includes a guided tour through the Opotiki Community Reef, an overview on the basics of reef building theory, educational materials, and even the opportunity to make a personalized reef ‘gift’. The tour is approximately 2 hours and you’ll want to dress warmly if the weather is cool. Calling ahead of time is a good idea, especially for larger groups, just to make sure there’s space available at the time you want to visit.
Also at the Opotiki Wharf, children and adults alike can enjoy viewing the large Children’s Art House mural on display, which beautifully illustrates Opotiki’s rich history and visions for the future. There is also a walkway along the bank you can enjoy for an extra stretch of the legs.
