Grays Bush Scenic Reserve – About the Reserve

Grays Bush Scenic Reserve is located about 10 km northeast of Gisborne, just off of Back Ormond Road and Harper Road. There is a sign posted on the road for the reserve.

Grays Bush Scenic Reserve is a smaller reserve, covering approximately 12 hectacres. The canopy reaches approximately 40 metres high and the floor of the reserve is quite dense. Even though it’s a small reserve, it attracts between 10 thousand and 12 thousand people each year. There is no fee to visit the reserve and it’s open to the public.

Grays Scenic Reserve Walking Trails

The Grays Scenic Reserve walking trails are a great way to get out in nature, and is home to some 400 to 500 year old native kahikatea trees. There are two tracks on the reserve. The shorter 15-20 minute track is flat and accessible to wheelchairs and prams (strollers), which makes this a family-friendly walk with young children and/or special accessibility needs in mind. The longer track takes around 40-60 minutes, depending on your level of fitness.

Explore the wildlife, the vegetation, and the variety of birds throughout the reserve. The reserve provides nesting habitat to both native and non-native birds, including the fantail, goldfinch, magpie, skylark, sparrow, thrush, warbler, black bird, bellbird, hawk, king fisher and so many more.
