Temporary Road Restrictions up to the East Cape Lighthouse
If you have plans to stay with us at the Hicks Bay Motel over the next few weeks or so, please be aware that due to damage from some of the recent storms, there are road restrictions leading up to the East Cape Lighthouse. The damage to the roadway began during Cyclone Pam earlier this year and was then compounded by the recent heavy storms.
Damage to the Roadways
The most recent storm left the Gisborne region with some serious damage from the winds and flooding. The Gisborne region experienced the heaviest rainfall it had seen all year, causing debris to collect underneath the main bridges and rivers to run up to dangerously high levels. Many areas were filled with mud after the tide receded.
Road Restrictions up to the East Cape Lighthouse
If you’re planning to head up to the East Cape Lighthouse to enjoy the first sunrise on the planet, please be aware of the road restrictions and plan accordingly. Temporary road restrictions up to the East Cape Lighthouse have been put in place for travelers’ safety:
Until further notice, caravans and truckloads over 200kg are not permitted on the road up to the East Cape Lighthouse.
How Long Will the Road Restrictions up to the East Cape Lighthouse Be In Effect?
